Summer is when a raised bed really pays off. Your main jobs shift from planting to watering, supporting and picking.
Keep water steady
Large, fruiting plants drink a lot. Deep morning watering and a layer of mulch are your best tools against heat stress.
Support tall plants early
Tie tomatoes to stakes or cages as they grow. Waiting until they flop risks broken stems.
Harvest often
- Pick beans every couple of days
- Harvest zucchini small for the best texture
- Pick tomatoes when fully colored and slightly soft
- Pinch basil tips to delay flowering
Replant gaps
When spring greens bolt in the heat, pull them and sow bush beans, or wait a few weeks and start fall crops.
